Therpautic Massage

Massage Therapy, anyone?!

The art of massage was considered sacred in India in 3000 BC and was passed down through generations for healing injuries, relieving pain, and preventing and curing illnesses. Massage was thought to restore the body's natural and physical balance, allowing it to
heal on its own.

Massage therapy has various benefits including lowering blood pressure, reducing chronic pain, calming the nervous system, alleviating anxiety and providing an increased feeling of overall wellbeing.

Today, massage therapy is an excellent option for the treatment of stress, chronic pain, muscle tension and more.

At Soul Sprout, we do not offer spa services or Swedish massage - we specialize in massage for creating structural change in the body. A combination treatment plan of therapeutic massage and acupuncture is particularly effective for those who seek assistance with pain and trigger points.

What is massage therapy?

The term "massage therapy" refers to a variety of techniques. Massage therapists generally press, rub, and manipulate the muscles and other soft tissue of the body, applying light to deep pressure, depending on the person and the ailment. Massage therapists use their hands and fingers, but they may also use their forearms and elbows.

How does massage therapy work?

Massage induces natural, involuntary relaxation responses from the nervous system. As a result, your heart rate and breathing rate slow down and your blood pressure and stress hormones decrease, effectively counteracting the harmful effects of stress. During a massage, pressure is applied to soft muscle tissue which leads to greater circulation of blood and lymph fluid and a reduction of swelling.

A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed that even one deep-tissue massage session can provide medical benefits to patients. Arginine vasopressin (AVP), a hormone that constricts blood vessels, increases blood pressure and reduces urine excretion, is significantly decreased by massage. Additionally, it reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, and increases lymphocytes, the white blood cells that attack cancer.
