Acupuncture For Fertility

If you’ve received the news that you and your partner are infertile, we understand the constant internal battle that you’re facing to stay hopeful for the future of your family. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a while, it may seem like everyone else has easy luck, yet there is none left for you.

It can feel like your body is betraying you when something so natural becomes a point of endless frustration. But, all hope is not lost!

In Chinese Medicine, acupuncture has been used to treat certain fertility issues in both men and women. Western medicine has finally begun to catch up with Eastern traditions and ancient wisdom that has carried people through physical struggles like these for centuries.

How does acupuncture treat infertility?

Acupuncture can improve sperm quality, help ovaries function, and balance the endocrine system and hormones. It is frequently combined with herbal medicine to create a robust approach tailored for each individual.

There are specific issues that acupuncture is not well suited for, such as tubal adhesions, which can occur from pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. A consultation with an acupuncturist to review your specific situation can determine the best plan of action.

If you have particular issues, such as endometriosis, you can still benefit from acupuncture as a supplemental treatment due to improved ovarian and follicular function. In addition, acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to facilitate a thick, rich lining. (Bet you never thought that would be a health goal of yours when you were younger, huh?!)

When should acupuncture treatment begin?

Acupuncture is quite similar to physical therapy in that it’s a process-oriented method of medical intervention. Essentially, it won’t hurt to do more rather than less!

Patients are commonly treated for 3 to 4 months before progressing onto insemination, IVF treatments, or donor-egg transfer. This pacing has proven to have a therapeutic effect.

Key things to know about acupuncture for fertility

  • Most miscarriages occur within the first 3 months of pregnancy, so we often recommend that treatment continues through week twelve to help prevent miscarriage.

  • Studies show that acupuncture, and not just fertility-focused, can increase live birth rates in patients who are also doing IVF treatment. It has been proven to help ease fertility-related stress and anxiety. There are no significant short or long term adverse side effects from doing acupuncture.

If you and your partner are struggling with infertility issues, you are not alone! Infertility affects more people than you might think. Roughly 15% of couples have trouble conceiving, and both women and men can be diagnosed as infertile for a wide variety of reasons.
